Abstracted Lineage—Hans Hofmann, Robert Henry, Laura Shabott and Joe Diggs
Abstracted Lineage is on view through October 9 at Berta Walker Gallery. The show is inspired by the continuing and fascinating lineage of Provincetown artists teaching the “Push/Pull” theory as created by Hans Hofmann and taught by him in Provincetown starting in 1935. One of his students was Provincetown artist Robert Henry who has incorporated Hofmann’s theory into his teachings. Berta Walker Gallery artists Laura Shabott and Joe Diggs studied with Henry and now through the Shabott/Barrett school a third generation of students has been studying Hofmann’s theory in Provincetown!
Abstracted Lineage features a selection of Hans Hofmann drawings, a group of paintings Robert Henry made from his Hofmann years, completed in 1955-60, and an exhibition of Laura Shabott’s paintings and drawings. A group exhibition of these artists in juxtaposition creates a fascinating conversation that has evolved over three quarters of a century.
