Paul Resika, Dragger, I, 2000oil on canvas 12 x 18 in

Provincetown Paintings, 1947-present Celebrating Paul Resika’s 95th Birthday

In celebration of Paul Resika’s 95th birthday, viewers are invited to journey with Resika through a unique group of paintings created in Provincetown from his earliest arrival in 1947 to today.

This exhibition features an overview of paintings, pastels and inks, ranging over the years from figurative to abstract, to sensually minimal, including en plein air paintings of the harbor, MacMillan Wharf,  the Provincetown skyline with the iconic horizon reflecting behind the Pilgrim Monument, a variety of his fishing boats ranging from the representational to nearly abstract, the sea activated by storms, haunting nocturnes of small bonfires, the gathered figures flickering like shadows surrounding the glowing center,  and the most recent “End of the Day” series with a blazing sun, stripped down to its essential spherical shape,  settling on the horizon just about to disappear into the ocean

Brenda Horowitz: Recent Paintings

Brenda Horowitz creates paintings that vibrate with bold energy and intense pigment. Vivid and expressive, "The result is breathless and ripe, more like a dream of summer than summer itself," wrote Cate McQuaid in the Boston Globe about a recent exhibition. Horowitz's art is uncluttered and decisive with compositions that evoke the feeling of a place fully settled into itself. Her paintings capture a sense of place in such a vivid manner that the viewer is only half a step from leaving this world and walking into her imagination.  Horowitz' compositions -simplified to land, water, sky, sometimes a house - explore the inherent character of the Cape landscape, where the quality of light reflected by the ocean intensifies the color of nature.

Rob Dutoit: Florals

Rob Dutoit will show a recent group of pastels, primarily florals.  “I loved this series when I saw it,” said Berta Walker, “and since Rob was a student of Paul Resika’s many years ago in New York and continues in this friendship these many years later, it felt like these special bouquets seemed perfect  to schedule with Paul’s show, adding to the  celebration of Paul Resika’s 95th Birthday.”

Dutoit works comfortably in many mediums — oils, gouache, ink and pastel. His art is often subtle, with hints of light peeking through the clouds and forests. It is also sensual, and deep, and serious, and celebrates the passion of our New England environment. Like many artists, he has come to what looks deceptively simple through a lengthy process of training and then letting go. His palette often uses what would be considered Impressionist colors.
