The day the pandemic lockdown began, Liz Carney left Provincetown to shelter in a historic house she bought in Orleans. For 15 years she had lived above Four Eleven Gallery, and managed the house for her family. The theme of laying down roots in a new town is visible in her new series of paintings focused on houses and gardens. Borrowing from the title of the publication House and Garden, the show gives nod to the “shelter” style magazine with its subject of idyllic country homes and settings. Yet the unexpected high key palette, typical of Carney’s work, conveys a charge and intensity that’s not so traditional. There’s a frenetic sense of urgency, whether in capturing the end of daylight or rendering a fading bouquet. These expressive works with their broad strokes of color and texture claim space within themselves and also act as a stake in the artist’s claim of a space of her own.
Liz Carney, an artist who has been painting the Outer Cape for 30 years, received her BA in studio art from Smith College. She opened Four Eleven Gallery in 2011.
