Rice Polak Gallery Through September 1, 2021
Opening Reception: Friday, August 20, 2021 (7pm – 9pm)
Olga Antonova is a Russian-born painter who has built an international reputation for her finely rendered yet whimsically romantic still lifes and self-portraits. Like the great European painters of the early 18th century, Antonova’s show, “Recent Paintings,” showcases her gift of taking ordinary subjects from everyday life and elevating them to the level of high art.
Painter, sculptor and artist, Larry Calkins was born a small logging community in Oregon and carries his childhood interest over into his series of sculptures, revolving around the same iconography. Calkins’ show, “two mountains,” features Abraham Lincoln as the focal point of his recent work.
Painter and artist, Lisbeth Firmin’s works are as fresh as they are masterful, pulsating with energy. The excitement created from seeing Firmin’s urban scenes of people walking down streets or standing on bus and train station platforms is arresting, reminding one of John Sloan and Edward Hopper. Her show, “Passing Time,” captures viewers’ attention with both light and clarity.
Sandra Pratt’s romantic landscapes and village scenes explore a potential for comfort in open, even barren spaces. The sparse compositions present a countryside that is safely isolated from industry and technology. Her show, “Contemplations,” depicts environments that possess age and history as well as a particular charm from being well used and needed.
