PHILIP MALICOAT
Known for his scenes of Provincetown, Massachusetts and the surrounding area, especially his atmospheric seascapes, PHILIP MALICOAT (1908 – 1981) was born in Indianapolis where he attended the John Herron Art Institute from 1928 to 1929. Following that, he studied in Provincetown with Charles Hawthorne and Henry Hensche at their Cape Cod School of Art.
Malicoat spent his first winter in Provincetown in 1931. He was a member of the Beachcombers social club with other artists including Gerrit Beneker, Edwin Dickinson, William Paxton, Karl Knaths, Ross Moffett, and Coulton and Frederick Waugh.
Later he became a trustee of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. Malicoat was also active in Woodstock, New York where he exhibited with the Woodstock Art Association. He also exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Institute of Chicago. He was also a founding member of Provincetown’s Fine Arts Work Center.
This exhibition pairs with a major exhibit of Malicoat’s large paintings at The Provincetown Art Association and Museum from June 10 - July 24. There will be an opening reception at the museum for this show on Friday, June 10 from 6-8pm.
We are pleased to offer this pairing of two masters both known for their evocative responses to intangible circumstances that resist definition. Atmospheric, dreamlike, and moody, the images are exquisite referents of our interior responses to light, temperature, space, and emotion. The exhibition will also feature a new painting by Elise Ansel and two new works from Richard Saja.
