What It Is: New Paintings by Helen Grimm.

Four Eleven Gallery, located at 411 Commercial Street in Provincetown, announces What It Is:
New Paintings by Helen Grimm. The show opens on Friday, 29 November and there will be a reception with the artist on Saturday, December 3d from 4-6 PM, The show runs through
Thursday, December 15th. In addition to the show, Grimm’s artworks will be available to view
and purchase at fourelevengallery.com

This show presents new works from the artist, including a continuation of her exploration of
Cape Cod’s ecology. A new body of nocturnes offers a more introspective take on life here in the off-season. “Helen’s new artworks are increasingly complex in their attention to form and composition, and her investigation of the way nighttime lays over our lives provokes a sense of mystery in the best way,” said Pete Hocking, curating manager of Four Eleven Gallery. “All of these paintings inspire me to stop and ponder big questions about life.”

The forms of shells have inspired Grimm’s painting for over twenty years. She’s particularly
drawn to their contradictions: the humble yet polished beauty within a rough worm-holed
exterior, and bleached starkness against a rich splash of color. These forms afford Grimm an
opportunity to explore line and shape, and scale and color. Hewing the line between
representation and abstraction, Grimm’s paintings are reminiscent of looking below surfaces.
You may be unsure of exactly what you’re seeing, but you feel its essence.
